r/German on Reddit: I'm bilingual(English/Spanish) learning German and finding it easier/more enjoyable than learning French, anyone has had a similar experience?

Title: Learning a Third Language: A Bilingual's Take on German Text: I'm a bilingual speaker of English and Spanish, and I've recently started learning a third language, German. Unlike what many people believe, I find it easier and more enjoyable to learn German than French. In this post, I'd like to share my observations and experiences with learning German. Reasons for Learning German: I chose to learn German because I'm fascinated by the differences between Germanic languages and Romance languages. I was curious to see how much I would retain from my knowledge of Spanish and how much would be new and challenging. I also wanted to explore the cultural richness of Germany and its contributions to the world. Challenges: Despite some initial difficulties, I found that my Spanish background actually helped me with German. I noticed that many German words have similar grammatical structures and sentence patterns to Spanish, which made it easier for me to understand and produce sentences. However, the pronunciation and intonation were quite different from Spanish, and I had to work on those skills, which was challenging at first. Advantages of Spanish Background: Some of the benefits of having a Spanish background while learning German include:

  • Familiarity with grammatical structures and sentence patterns
  • Ability to pick up vocabulary more quickly
  • Easier learning of certain idiomatic expressions and collocations
  • Enhanced ability to distinguish between similar-sounding words Similarities to English: I also found that German has some similarities to English, which helped me to pick up the language more easily. For example:
  • Words like "Danke" (thank you) and "Sprechen Sie Englisch?" (do you speak English?) sounded and looked familiar to me.
  • I noticed that many German words have similarities to English words, such as "jung" (young) and " jung Frau" (young woman). Other Language Enthusiasts: I'm not alone in my experience. I found a video of a native Spanish speaker who also struggled with French and is now learning German. She shares my experience of finding German more intuitive and enjoyable to learn, especially the tone of voice. Conclusion: Learning a new language can be a fun and rewarding experience, and it's great to have a community of language enthusiasts to share ideas and experiences with. As a bilingual speaker, I'm grateful for the opportunities I have to explore different languages and cultures. If you're learning a new language, I encourage you to keep pushing forward and enjoy the journey.
