HEARTS: Technical Package for Cardiovascular Disease Management in Primary Health Care
Overview
The HEARTS technical package provides a strategic approach to improving cardiovascular health in countries. It comprises six modules and an implementation guide, supporting ministries of health in strengthening cardiovascular disease (CVD) management in primary health care settings. The modules are designed to be practical and step-by-step, supported by an overarching technical document that provides a rationale and framework for the integrated approach to managing non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
Importance of Cardiovascular Health
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death globally, with over three-quarters of heart disease and stroke-related deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries.
The HEARTS Modules
The HEARTS modules are intended for use by policymakers and programme managers at different levels within ministries of health, and in resource-limited settings, who can influence CVD primary care delivery. The modules include:

- Offers guidance on effective counseling techniques
Module 2: Evidence-based Treatment Protocols
- Provides evidence-based treatment protocols for common cardiovascular conditions
